Are Those Blackheads on Your Nose Really Blackheads?

We're about six weeks out from our November 1st launch, and nose is out front on the zone race right now — so today's a nose day. Here's the short answer to the question in the title: a lot of what people call blackheads on their nose aren't blackheads at all. They're sebaceous filaments, a normal part of how an oily nose works, and telling the two apart changes what you should (and shouldn't) do about them.

What's the difference between a blackhead and a sebaceous filament?

A blackhead is a clogged pore — oil and dead skin packed into the opening and darkened where it meets the air. A sebaceous filament is the pore doing its normal job: a thin channel that wicks oil up to the surface, usually showing up as tiny gray or tan dots rather than dark plugs.

The quick tells: blackheads tend to feel slightly raised or rough, look genuinely dark, and often sit on their own. Filaments are flat, uniform, and show up in that orderly little pattern across the tip and sides of the nose, especially on oily skin. If you press one and a short, pale, hair-like strand of oil comes out — and the same pore looks the same again a day or two later — that's almost certainly a filament, not a blackhead.

Why does your nose have so many of them?

Because your nose has the highest concentration of oil glands anywhere on your face. More glands means more oil, wider pore openings, and more visible filaments — it's the T-zone doing exactly what it's built to do.

Every one of those glands empties through a pore, and on the nose they sit packed close together, so the filaments line up in that classic pattern people notice in the mirror under bright light. The oilier your skin runs, the more obvious they get. It isn't dirt and it isn't a hygiene problem — it's density.

Can you get rid of sebaceous filaments for good?

No — and that's not a failure on your part. Filaments are a permanent feature of oily skin. Even if you extract one, the pore refills within days because the gland keeps making oil, which is its actual job.

That's why pore strips and hard scrubbing feel productive but don't last: you're clearing the surface, not removing the structure underneath. Push too hard and the nose can end up red and irritated, and some people find it looks oilier afterward as the skin overcompensates. With a congested nose, gentle almost always beats aggressive.

What actually helps a nose that looks congested?

Consistency over intensity. A gentle routine, keeping your hands off, and not trying to squeeze every pore does more for a nose over time than any one big deep-clean session.

Ingredients like salicylic acid are known for helping keep oily pores looking clearer, so a product built around one can earn a spot in your routine. Beyond that: wash your nose after you sweat, don't sleep in sunscreen or makeup, and skip the daily pore strip. And know that an actual pimple — a raised whitehead that's come to a head on your nose — is a different thing from a filament. For that, a hydrocolloid patch like our Spot Dots is known for covering the spot, absorbing the fluid, and keeping your fingers off it while it settles. A patch won't remove a blackhead or a filament, and it isn't meant to — that's not the job. For congestion that really bothers you, or anything persistent or painful, a dermatologist can do proper extractions and point you to the right actives.

Where the Nose Patch fits

The Nose Patch — our T-shaped patch shaped for the tip and the sides of the nose, a curve that flat dots never stay put on — is coming in November; join the nose list if you want it first. It uses a simplified hydrocolloid formula, with the final ingredient list published at launch.

Race update: nose 3 · chin 1 · forehead 1 · kids 1.
