Do Blotting Papers Help an Oily Nose?

We're about four weeks out from Caluna's November 1st launch, and the nose list is still out front in our zone race — so here's a question oily-nosed folks ask me constantly. Do blotting papers help an oily nose? Yes, they do — but only at one job: lifting the oil already sitting on your skin so your nose looks matte. They don't change how much oil your nose makes.

Do blotting papers actually work on an oily nose?

Yes, at exactly what they're built for — soaking up surface oil. Press one to a shiny nose and it pulls the grease off the top of your skin in a few seconds, no water or scrubbing involved.

They're thin tissue or film sheets that absorb sebum on contact. The nose carries the highest density of oil glands on your face, so it's the spot where blotting pays off most — it's usually the first place to go shiny by midday. What a blotting paper can't do is reach into a pore or slow your glands down; that part is mostly genetics and hormones.

Are blotting papers better than washing your nose again midday?

For shine, usually yes. Re-washing your face in the middle of the day strips the surface and can nudge your glands into making more oil to make up for it.

A blotting paper takes the oil without the soap, water, and friction, so you get a matte nose without the rebound-oil cycle or the tightness that comes from over-cleansing. It's the gentler move when all you're really after is less shine.

Do blotting papers cause your nose to make more oil?

No — that's a myth. Simply lifting oil off the surface doesn't signal your glands to produce more; it's stripping and over-drying the skin that tends to do that.

Because blotting is gentle and water-free, it's one of the lower-risk ways to deal with a shiny nose through the day.

How do you use blotting papers without irritating your nose?

Press, don't rub. Lay the sheet on your nose, hold it for a few seconds, and lift it straight off — no dragging back and forth.

  • Press and hold instead of wiping, so you're not sanding the skin
  • Start at the sides of the nose and the crease where it meets your cheek, where oil pools first
  • Use a fresh sheet or a clean section each time so you're not pressing oil back on
  • Blot right over makeup — it lifts shine without disturbing a set base the way a tissue can
  • A couple of times a day is plenty; blotting every hour can leave skin feeling tight

Can blotting papers clear or prevent breakouts on your nose?

No. They manage shine, not acne — they lift oil sitting on top of the skin, but they don't get into a pore or do anything to a blemish.

Less surface oil can make your nose feel fresher and look a little calmer, which is a real perk, but blotting isn't a treatment. If your nose is genuinely breaking out, that's a skincare question — and sometimes a dermatologist one — not something a sheet of paper fixes.

What about an actual spot on your oily nose?

That's a different tool entirely. Once a whitehead has come to a head, a hydrocolloid patch is known for covering it, absorbing the fluid it draws up, and keeping your fingers off it while it settles.

For a single spot on a flatter part of the nose, our Spot Dots are available now. And because the nose is curved and a flat dot tends to lift at the edges, The Nose Patch — a single shaped piece for the nose and its sides — is coming in November; join the nose list if that's your zone.

When should you see a dermatologist?

If your nose stays oily to the point of constant congestion, or it keeps breaking out no matter what you change, a dermatologist can look at what's actually driving it. Blotting papers are a shine fix, not a medical one — nothing here treats or cures anything.
