Does Sunscreen Make Your Nose Break Out?

Does sunscreen make your nose break out? For most people the sunscreen itself isn't the culprit; it's a heavy, pore-clogging formula sitting on the oiliest patch of your face, mixing with oil and sweat all day, that can leave the pores around your nose looking congested.

Does sunscreen actually cause breakouts on your nose?

Usually not on its own. Wearing sunscreen every day protects your skin far more than the occasional clogged pore ever costs it, so this is not a reason to skip it.

What tends to clog a pore is a thick, greasy formula left to mingle with a full day of oil and sweat — not the SPF itself. Your nose just shows it first, because it makes more oil than anywhere else on your face.

Why does sunscreen break out your nose and not your cheeks?

Because your nose is the oiliest real estate on your face. It carries far more oil glands per square centimeter than your cheeks, so any heavy product has more oil to blend with and more pores to settle into there.

It's also the center of your T-zone, where sunscreen tends to pool in the creases beside your nostrils and get rubbed around by glasses, sweat, and your own hands. All of that gives product more chances to work its way into a pore on your nose than on the drier parts of your face.

What kind of sunscreen is less likely to clog your nose?

Look for "non-comedogenic," "oil-free," or "gel" on the label — those are formulated to be less likely to block pores. On an oily nose, a lightweight fluid or gel usually sits better than a thick, dewy cream.

Mineral versus chemical matters less than most people think; texture and amount matter more. Pat a thin, even layer over your nose instead of piling it on, and give it a minute to set before makeup or a hat goes on top.

Does sweat make sunscreen worse for your nose?

It can. When you sweat, sunscreen, oil, and dead skin get pushed around your face and can settle into the pores on and around your nose — especially if you wipe down with your hands or the hem of your shirt.

I'm a plumber in Florida, so I've sweated through sunscreen by ten in the morning more times than I can count. A few things help: blot with a clean cloth instead of scrubbing, reapply a light sunscreen every couple of hours instead of one heavy coat in the morning, and keep your hands off your face.
