Is Your Sunscreen Breaking Out Your Forehead?

We're about five weeks out from November 1st, and the nose list is still out front — but I run on Sunday mornings, so this one's personal. Can your sunscreen break out your forehead? Yes, it can — though it's usually the formula and a sweaty hat line doing the damage, not the SPF itself.

Can sunscreen actually cause forehead breakouts?

Yes, it can — but usually it's the kind of sunscreen and how it's worn, not sunscreen as a whole. A heavy, greasy SPF that sits under a hat brim all day can trap oil and sweat against your forehead.

Sunscreen is one of the best things you can do for your skin, full stop — I'm not talking anyone out of wearing it. But the forehead is a wide, oily stretch of skin that's often covered by a hat, a visor or your own hairline, and a thick sunscreen up there has nowhere to go. Add a workout and you've built a little greenhouse right where breakouts love to start.

Why does sunscreen bother the forehead more than other spots?

Because the forehead collects the three things that clog pores: oil, sweat and friction. Sunscreen just adds a fourth layer on top.

Your forehead has a high density of oil glands, and it's the part of your face most likely to be pressed under a cap, a headband or a helmet. When sunscreen mixes with sweat and then gets rubbed in by a hat band, it can settle into pores instead of sitting on top of the skin. That's why a lot of people notice bumps along the hairline and hat line rather than dead center.

How do you wear sunscreen without breaking out your forehead?

Pick a lightweight, oil-free (often labeled "non-comedogenic") sunscreen, and actually wash it off your forehead once you're done sweating for the day. Those two changes clear up most sunscreen-related forehead bumps.

A few things that have worked for me and for people who've written in: reach for a gel or fluid SPF instead of a thick cream for daily wear; don't pile it under a tight hat you'll sweat in for hours; and give your forehead a real cleanse at night rather than a quick splash. If you reapply during a long day outside, blot the sweat first so you're not layering fresh SPF onto a wet, salty forehead.

What about sunscreen on a run or at the gym?

Use a sweat-resistant formula and rinse your forehead as soon as you reasonably can afterward. Leaving sunscreen and dried sweat sitting on your skin for hours is what tends to cause the trouble.

I still wear SPF on my Sunday runs — Florida sun isn't optional. The difference is I keep a towel handy, wipe my forehead instead of dragging a sweaty hat brim across it, and wash up once I'm home. Skin that gets cleaned tends to feel calmer than skin left to marinate all afternoon.

What if you already have a spot on your forehead?

Cover it and stop touching it. A hydrocolloid patch sits over the spot, absorbs fluid, and — honestly — keeps your fingers off it while it does its thing.

That's the whole idea behind our Spot Dots, available now — small, nearly invisible dots you can wear day or night. For a breakout spread across a wider stretch of forehead, one wide patch beats dotting six little circles across your hairline, which is exactly why the Forehead Patch is coming in November — join the forehead list. It's a simplified hydrocolloid formula, with the final ingredient list published at launch.

One honest note: if your forehead bumps are small, itchy, uniform and just won't quit — especially after workouts — that can be something like folliculitis or so-called "fungal acne," which patches and regular acne products won't touch. If it's persistent or painful, see a dermatologist. No patch is a substitute for that.
